A Journey of Resilience: The Tale of Sirga and Modisa Wildlife Project

From a helpless 10-day-old cub abandoned in a problem predator facility, Sirga the lioness has grown into a symbol of resilience and strength under the watchful eye of her caretaker, Valentin Grüner, the co-founder of Modisa Wildlife Project. The duo shared countless unforgettable moments in the savannah of the Kalahari, and it was evident a new home, where Sirga could continue to roam freely, was crucial.

However, the reality of releasing a captive lion into the wild is a complex process. The threats from poachers, livestock farmers, and rival lion prides are significant. The need for adequate habitat and prey, and considering Sirga's upbringing away from a pride, made it clear: a full release into the wild posed risks we couldn't take.

Through the tireless efforts of our team and the generous backing of our supporters, we have successfully established a 2000-hectare (20 square kilometres) sanctuary for Sirga. Outlined by secure fencing, this marked a fresh chapter for Sirga and the Project

Sirga, now an 11-year-old lioness, enjoys her freedom in the safety of her reserve. As a semi-wild lioness, she sustains herself by hunting prey. Equipped with a satellite tracking collar and monitored 24/7, Sirga often meanders near Valentin's home. Their relationship remains as strong as ever, with regular visits marking their enduring bond.

Sirga has garnered a vast amount of publicity worldwide. On television as well as on multiple social media platforms. With her reach she now acts as an ambassador for her wild relatives and the Kalahari ecosystem as a whole.

We're committed to safeguarding Sirga, along with the entire area under our care. To continue this journey and provide the best possible life for Sirga and her fellow wild creatures, we need your support. You can help by booking your stay with us or by supporting us by joining our family remotely via our Patreon page.
